Harmony Search Algorithm for Probabilistic Analysis of Earth Slope

This paper presents a new procedure based on harmony search algorithm for probabilistic analysis of an earth slope. The stability analysis of earth slopes is a geotechnical problem characterized by various sources of uncertainty. Unlike the deterministic method, probabilistic method is capable of taking into account the uncertainties for slope safety assessment. In this study, the reliability index defined by Hasofer and Lind is employed for estimating the reliability index, which corresponds to the probability of failure in our case. The performance function is formulated by Spencer’s method of slices for general shape of slip surface. To calculate the minimum reliability index and corresponding critical probabilistic slip surface harmony search (HS) meta-heuristic algorithm is proposed. The HS algorithm is conceptualized using the musical process of searching for a perfect state of harmony. By this method, reliability of the nonlinear and complex performance function can be evaluated without derivation. The effectiveness and robustness of the proposed algorithm are demonstrated by considering a number of published cases and the results indicate the successful working of the new method.
